posted Jun 2, 2012, 7:35 AM by Kiwanis3 Webmaster   [ updated Jun 2, 2012, 7:36 AM ]

The Kiwanis Club of Houston Sunrise recently awarded $2,500 in scholarships to four students from Barbara Jordan High School and B.T. Washington High School, including the inauguration of the A. Charles Haston Scholarship Award. All four students are members at their respective campuses of Key Club International, a community service and leadership development club for high school students sponsored by Kiwanis.

Recipient of the A. Charles Haston Scholarship was Aaliyah Mason of Barbara Jordan High School. Other scholarship recipients included Ciara Valdery and Tiera Chambers, also from Barbara Jordan, and Maydis Delgado from B.T. Washington.

Haston is a charter member of the Houston Sunrise Kiwanis club. He previously has been honored with a Hixson Fellowship of Kiwanis International. He currently serves on the club’s board of directors. He also is the namesake of the Alphi Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.’s A. Charles Haston Brother’s Keeper program. The 97-year-old retired educator is a 1937 graduate of Langston University in Oklahoma City.

Kiwanis is a global organization of members of every age who are dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. Houston Sunrise Kiwanis sponsors Key Clubs at Booker T. Washington and Barbara Jordan Sr. High Schools. The Club also performs regular community service projects and hosts a race in the annual Kiwanis Kids Triathlon Race in the summer.

The club meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday at 7 a.m. at Kojak’s Café, 1912 18th St. You can visit the club online at kiwanishoustonsunrise.org or on facebook.
