posted Jan 15, 2012 8:48 AM by Kiwanis3 Webmaster

Here is an opportunity to get involved with the Relay for Life. Relay for Life is an 18 hour cancer walk that celebrates the lives of survivors and remembers those that we have lost to cancer. There are many ways that Kiwanis can help. If you are interested you can make a team, help during the event, help before the event setting up, or help at the end of the event to help clean everything. The event is April 13th-14th from 6pm-1pm. If you have any additional questions please let me know.

Opportunities to Get Involved at the District Level

posted Sep 11, 2011 3:36 PM by Heather Harrington

TO: All Club Secretaries - please share with all club members

There are lots of opportunities to get involved with District level programs this next year. There are many new programs in education, technology, publicity and SLP. Below is a partial listing as of the end of July, 2011. If you are interested, please contact the name and email address following each entry.

1. Governor's Project. Get active with the District Chair, Jay MaCaulay and organize a shoe drive in your division or zone. Tasks include visiting with other clubs and doing a presentation on the Shoe Drive and about the Buckner Shoes for Orphan Soles Program. Jay has some material available to show the clubs. Contact Laura Lammons at txokdist@swbell.net

2. Technology. We need people in each division around the district to help with creating and updating websites for all the clubs. Many clubs in the district don't have websites but we can create websites on Wordpress.com for free and these can be easily updated by various members in each club. Contact me if you are interested and I'll put together a webinar showing how to create these and teach the clubs to maintain them. - Marshall Kregel mkregel@hotmail.com

3. Technology. Also needed are volunteers to help work on the Division Newsletter each month. Tasks will include video work, taking pictures, collecting stories from the clubs and doing some writing. We want to be able to share our stories with the world and we can do this via the websites, social media, and using the new District Website. Please contact Marshall Kregel at mkregel@hotmail.com

4. SLP. Work with the Lt. Governors within the zones to educate division and club chairs on all SLP programs. Contact Susan Hennum at susan.hennum@hotmail.com

5. Community Services. Work with Division Chair Kelly Poland to educate clubs on the many opportunities for community service (district wide). Contact Kelly at kelly.poland@yahoo.com

6. Childrens Miracle Network. Work with District Chair Auggie Augenstein on CMN events and education around the district. Tasks include doing presentations for clubs and sending out information to local community contacts about the efforts the Kiwanis clubs are making for CMN. Contact Auggie at auggie01a@att.net

7. District Office move. We are planning on moving the district office into a new location in Arlington. On "move day", we need to pick up a lot of stuff and move it to the new location and set it back up. This also includes all the network and computer stuff. If you can help here, let Laura Lammons know at txokdist@swbell.net This will probably happen sometime in September.

8. Publicity. This is a biggie. You will work with Carl Sullivan (Chairman of Publicity for 2011-2012) and Marshall Kregel (Technology Chairman) in helping clubs make use of technology, social media, blog radio and video channels to get the word out to the communities about Kiwanis programs. Tasks will include doing programs for clubs, writing stories, possibly doing video or pictures, and showing clubs how to make the best use of local news outlets. You will be assisted with webinars and some cool software programs. This is one area we really need some help on. Contact Carl at olediz@cox.net (Oklahoma City) or Marshall at mkregel@hotmail.com (Dallas)

9. Risk Management. Work directly with chairman Colleen Biggerstaff helping all clubs get 100% complient with the new CBI policy. Tasks include doing presentations for clubs. Contact Colleen at colleenbiggerstaff@tx.rr.com

New Kiwanis TX-OK District Building

posted Sep 11, 2011 3:30 PM by Heather Harrington   [ updated Sep 11, 2011 3:32 PM ]

For over 20 years, the Texas-Oklahoma Kiwanis District office has been located in leased office space in Arlington. With that lease about to renew, District leadership began looking for trading off lease payments for payments to purchase a building. Thanks to an agreement with the T-O Foundation, that is now a reality! The T-O Foundation has purchased a wonderful building at 3010 W. Park Row Dr, Pantego, TX 76013 (a small town surrounded by Arlington).

During the building inspection a few items were noted that need our immediate attention. For those Kiwanians that are handy with tools that could offer their services and/or time to get these items knocked off the list, please send me an email with your specialty and when you are available. If you would like to donate needed items listed below, that would be awesome too!

Governor Sam will be at the building at 10:00 a.m. this Saturday the 10th. He will be rolling up his sleeves and working right along with everyone else. So, bring your ladder, your tool box and let’s come together and get the building ready to move into.

Please see the attached summary of the inspection report. If you want the full report, just let me know.

Below is a list of the areas that we need assistance with or items that we need to purchase soon:
  • BLINDS – REPLACEMENT
  • CARPENTER OR CONSTRUCTION
  • CARPET – REPLACEMENT UPSTAIRS
  • CARPET CLEANING
  • ELECTRICAL
  • FENCING
  • HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING REPAIR
  • JANITORIAL
  • LAWN MAINTENANCE
  • PAINTER

  • LARGE OUTDOOR TRASH CANS W/WHEELS
  • VACUUM
  • VOLUNTEERS TO HELP PACK UP CURRENT DISTRICT OFFICE

A map of the new building is also attached. Hope you can make it this Saturday or maybe another day. Let me know.

Assistance for Wild Fire Relief Programs

posted Sep 11, 2011 3:28 PM by Heather Harrington

To: CLUB SECRETARIES – please send to everyone in your club…

Bastrop & Greater Austin Area – donate to the Ministerial Alliance and all monies will stay in the immediate area without any significant overhead. Make checks payable to the Bastrop Fire Relief Program, P. O. Box 876, Bastrop, TX 78602-0876. Per LTG John Polk, Div 38.

He will make sure the checks are given to the local Salvation Army groups. You may also send directly to Salvation Army, P. O. Box 1000, Austin, TX 78767-1000. Make sure to mark the check Central Texas Fire Relief. Credit card donations may be made online at www.salvationarmyaustin.org .

Also, see our very own Circle K group’s offer of help…

My fellow T-O CKI'ers,

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you last Sunday marked one of the worst days in Texas history, as fires began to emerge and spread all over the Central Texas area, including Bastrop, Leander, areas of North Austin, and areas spreading south of Austin. As of today, over 40,000 acres of land have been destroyed by the fire, over 600 homes destroyed, and over 5,000 people displaced. We should not forget fires in San Angelo earlier this year. With these severely dry times in Texas, we can only hope that these fires can be contained soon.

I seek to encourage you all to join in efforts to provide relief to those affected by these fires. Your fellow members of the University of Texas at Austin CKI have quickly responded to the situation by establishing a donation table on their campus to collect money, non-perishable food items, and clothing. Everything they receive from these donations will be donated directly to those displaced by these fires. It is a simple gesture that can provide an enormous amount of support for our community. I believe that as members of the Mighty District of Texas-Oklahoma CKI, each of our clubs can participate in similar projects as UT CKI has done, and together we can provide relief efforts to those who have been affected by the fire, and those still in harm's way.

I encourage you all to seek assistance from your local Key Clubs, and Kiwanis Clubs, as they undoubtedly have been affected just the same as we have. By enlisting our K-Family counterparts to participate in CKI's efforts to accumulate donations for the Central Texas area, we can ensure that more people helped. Together, the K-Family can (and will) make a difference.

Though many of us may not be directly affected by these fires, I ask of you to think of those who are; your fellow CKI members, K-Family members, classmates, friends, and so on, who have lost something or someone to these dreadful fires. Anything you can do to help will be appreciated.

If you are interested, and would like more information on what UTCKI is doing to provide relief efforts, you can contact Secretary, Cortney Ferris, at utaustincki.secretary@gmail.com.

Bob Carlson's Passing

posted Jun 20, 2011 10:54 AM by Kiwanis Division 3

TO: T-O Kiwanis Clubs

Robert “Bob” Carlson joined Alamo Kiwanis Club in January 1979 and served as Division 5 LTG from 1989-1990. He also served on the T-O Foundation and possibly other areas that I am not aware of. He passed away Thursday, June 9, 2011. He would have been 70 on August 19th. Arrangements are pending, but this is what his wife, Joy wanted us to pass on to our members and others:
  • Passed with Liver Disease
  • Viewing is possibly Monday or Tuesday afternoon at Porter Loring. Look for news in the paper, obit section.
  • Gathering afterwards at Club Giraud at Bob’s Request!!
  • Need count from members that wish to attend the gathering.

Bob was an active participant in Kiwanis and deserves a great “send-off” to eternal rest with God.
